On this woman’s day let’s take a fresh look at menopause. It’s the most dreaded, most feared, transition in a woman’s life. But in all honesty, it is highly empowering if you know how to manage it well.

Do you know only we and two other whale species are the only ones that menopause in nature. The rest of the mammals procreate( reproduce) till the end. Research proves that, this is because, the wisdom of these three mammals benefits their community (herds) much more than just reproduction.

So cheer up friends ,WE are not getting old WE are just getting wise. So Let’s look afresh, at the main changes that happen during this period,

  • Oestrogen drops<\li>
  • Hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings begin<\li>
  • Calcium loss from bones leading to osteoporosis starts<\li>
  • Menopausal depression tags with empty nest syndrome

Then how do we go about Managing this change in gear,

1) Focus on natural HRTncrease intake of phytoestrogens

  • Isoflavanoids. sources- soyabeans, white red and green beans, chickpeas, peanut<\li>
  • Lignans sources – fibrous foods, flaxseeds, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, grapefruit <\li>
  • Coumestan. sources- split bean, sprouts, Lima bean

In short go big on beans, but remember sprout them to increase their nutritive value and make them easily digestible, or at least soak them before cooking.

2) A fresh look at Calcium

  • Decrease loss of calcium- avoid or reduce caffeine and carbonated drinks, they accelerate bone loss<\li>
  • Increase Supply of Calcium <\li>
  • Magnesium helps calcium absorption- so go bananas over bananas they are high in magnesium <\li>
  • Tofu, sesame seeds are high in calcium and phytoestrogens- so 2 teaspoons of sesame seed ,keep those nasty knee Aches and crazy hot flushes away<\li>
  • Increase absorption of calcium <\li>
  • Think probiotics- increase intake of lactobacillus acidophilus and bifides- Yogurt,Tofu,kefir- fermenting helps<\li>
  • Exercise especially in the sun- VitD( from the sun) and exercise enhance not just the calcium absorption but is a mood lifter walk the Talk in the Morning sun!<\li>
  • Decrease Saturated fats and artificial sugars they interferes with the body’s ability to metabolise oestrogen and absorb calcium
